Trevor described where we are to someone as the subject line. The middle of nowhere to most, but the most perfect place on earth according to us. Today we drove to Barbaresco and walked around the town.
I used the term town lightly as it was pretty much 3 streets. We were there so early there really wasn't much open, but I must comment on the many many strange statues, or instead I'll just add a pic.
We strolled around for a while, and then decided to head to the town of Bra.
It is quite a bit bigger then anywhere we have been in the last few days, but most things are closed there on Mondays, so there wasn't much to do. We walked around, checked out a couple of churches, stopped for a gelato, stopped at the Panetteria (bakery) for a pastry and then decided there really is no place like home....err I mean Barolo. I think in another life I potentially lived there.
We went to a really cute place for lunch where the waitress spoke no english. The menu was hand written so we could even read the words (not that we would have known what they meant anyways). We are in an area where the traditional food or typical food from this area is not as mainstream as risottos, gnocchi, caprese salad etc, but man is it good. So at lunch where they speak no english, we can't read the menu and our phone is getting no service for us to translate some of the words we basically close our eyes and point at things on the menu (well we might as well have). So the first course comes and (HAHAHAHA) Trevor has ordered anchovies (BAAAAAA-HAHAHA). I wish I had a picture of the look on his face. "Great - I just ordered anchovies" was his comment. It became far less humorous when they were actually delicious! I don't know why that shocks me as everything here is good, but still it provided for much of the day's entertainment.
You can't really see in the picture, but they are full/whole anchovies (far plate).
After lunch we headed to two Enotecas. One was a very old man that was born upstairs (literally) of the wine shop. An Enoteca is a place where you can go and sample many wines from the region, but from many producers. We sampled a few and purchased a few as well.
We headed to the next stop which was very swanky. It almost looked snobby or pretentious (ha - for the few that get that). We decided we showed up for lunch yesterday which was set up for a wedding fancier then any wedding we have been to, and the day before for lunch at a place where they don't even have menus they just read you what they are offering, so what the heck we thought.... The lady there was great. We tried (the collective we as Trevor had to drive us home (YES!)) many of their wines. They were super! We ended up buying 5-6 bottles, and went on our way.
And just incase you find yourself needing to wash your hands in the middle of the street....
We are just relaxing on our terrace now before we get ready for dinner with the Swedes.
